I started this blog when I first went on an exchange to Brisbane, Australia. During that experience, I discovered my love for culture, travelling and adventures. This blog has followed me since and been my forum for pictures and stories from Tanzania, South Africa, Ireland, Fiji, Malaysia, Singapore, Europe etc.

THE OVERLAND TRACK

Publicerad 2012-12-23 04:27:06 i Allmänt,

So.
It's done. One of my dreams since I first came to Australia. To walk the overland track in Tasmania (one of the top 5 walks in the world). In total, we (my friends Beau, Amber and tom) hiked 80.5km over 6 days. The last 29km were all done during the last day. It may not seem too much but remember that the hike goes over Cradle Mountains and sometimes (especially the some of the sidetracks) would take over 2 hrs to complete although they were only 2km.

During the first day, the only think I could think was "o gosh". My pack, which I will burn in the Brazilian BBQ in our backyard for being so bad, weight initially 16 kg. All foods were dehydrated and packed in zip lock bags, so you'd only have to add water to it. Also had a lot of chocolate, musli and protein bars, dried fruit and carrots.
About 20 min into the hike on day 1. Offered a steep uphill and sunshine.

Learned so much by doing the hike though. Just from mistakes and by observing others (only a maximum of 30 people can start the track during the same day during high season). We did see other people in the huts, but generally, during the walks, it wasn't too bad. Sometimes, we would walk a whole day without meeting anyone else.

I could keep writing forever about this incredible trip, but that might be boring. So I'm just gonna do a short version and upload some pictures.

Distance: 80.5km

Time: 6days (walking time ............)

Highlights:
1. Mine and Tom's side trip to Mt Ossa (Tasmanias highest peak of 1617m). Almost decided to skip this sidetrip as it was windy and pissing down, but decided to give it a go. After a few 100 meters up, it was pure blue sky, and amazingly beautiful. Think something in style with Granma's garden. Perfectly shaped flower arrengements (by nature itself ofcourse), birds and butterflies. Me and Tom felt as if we were the main characters in the sound of music. Getting closer to the top, we had snowfall in the middle of the aussie summer.
2. The waterfalls (especially D'Altons and Fergussons)
3. Tea and miso soup in the evenings.
4. Sunset at 9.30pm.
5. My winter gloves as I spontaniously invested in just before the shuttle bus took us up in the mountains. They saved my fingers more than once!
6. Baby joey in mums pocket.

Me next to Crater lake, day 1. A bit of board walk on the track, and Fergusson's waterfall (day 4).

Joey <3

Me and Tom singing the hills are alive to the sound of music on our way up to Mt Ossa, Tom rolling a snowball at the top, the peak just behind us, and me finding snow in the aussie summer.

Spotted:
One echidna, two wombats, numerous of wallabees and joeys and two extremely rare eastern quoll (also called native cat).

Downfalls:
1. The second day of our hike, it was so windy and the rain was falling as never before. Freezing cold and three ours of pure hell.
2. Constantly wet socks and boots.

Drying socks and mobile phones in front of the heater (back in Lake St Claire), Me and Beau at the edge of forth valley lookout (day 3), Tasmanian waranth, miso soup time in the hut.

Weather and temperature:
Went through everything. Mainly rain, but also a few rare occasions of sun, wind, mus, hail and snow. Generally the T shifted between 5-25 degrees. One night (inside the hut) the T was down on 7 and even after putting all clothes on, it was still freezing.

Undefined waterfalls.

Group shot at Fergussons waterfall, an exhausted me somewhere 12km from the end of the journey, Beau, Amber and Tom and me washing my feet for the first time on day 4 ;)

On the suspension bridge over Narcissus river, Tom being crazy, Tom practicing his yoga and me taking a look of the forld from another perspective.

For next time:
Dont pack a bikini when hiking in tasmania during summer, bring more soup and tea, bring condensed milk, your feet will always be wet but they warm up after 20 min of hiking, a walking stick is essential, bring cards and a book.

Me and Amber at Marioons lookout.
Me holding on to a rock on the way op to the peak of Cradle Mountain.

As you understand. I can just go nuts with the pictures, there are so many and the journey was incredible. It sets your mind free and you can just be...
Back to civilazation, and after the first shower in 7 days, me and Tom are celebrating our achivements with a Ginger beer at the local pub (while Beau and Amber were lazy enough to catch the ferry the last 20km of the walk).

What else can I say. If you ever get the chance....DO IT!

MI LOVE

Before I get into the fact that I've been away for holidays for one week (will upload pics next asap). COOPER AND JOHNNY ARE GONE =((((
They moved back to Ireland on the13th (same day as I took off for my little journey) and I just got back yesterday, without any wagging tail or smiling face to meet me in the doorway. Just silence=(
43 spring street will never be the same. Johnny has been the best housemate ever and the fact that Coop is gone is ofcourse unbearable. Very tempted to get my own little pup... But we'll see I guess.

BROTHERS FROM DIFFERENT MOTHERS

Publicerad 2012-12-04 21:59:59 i Allmänt,

Once again I am puppy sitting Tim as Linda's mum is visiting from Sweden and they went to Fraser Island. Coop and Tim loves eachother.... They share everything lol!
They do actually really like eachother but Coop is a bit selfish when it comes to sharing his toys and his water bowl. Such a funny facial expression!

One week till holidays. Can't believe how much I have to do before then and its not only work related stuff. As Johnnys is moving out we have had a million of houseinspections with the weirdest people you could imagin wanting the room. In all honesty, I think we went through about 15 people before we found our new guy. With that comeas a lot of cleaning up, I have to pack up as I am moving in to Johnnys room (bigger and has 2 windows rather than 1=)), transferring electricity bills etc etc. Also have work schedule filled from morning till late evening everyday until taking off. Packing for this trip is harder than any other trip as well as you have to be prepared for anything to happen! Rain, snow, leeches, 40 degrees and sunshine. I need a few extra days...

ohoo...yday was a bit hot:

FRASER ISLAND 3rd TIME

Publicerad 2012-11-27 21:45:35 i Allmänt,

Fraser Island was just as amazing as usually. Except that the two lakes that are ormaly crystal blue were sort of more green or brown. I guess as a result of last week's storm that hit Queensland. It is still paradise.
Beach driving!
John in Lake Wabby
Homies. Johnnys last trip!
Pretty good waking up in the morning when it looks like this...
Dingo
Morning yoga on the car
Me and John in Eli Creek
Just a little jelly fish... :S
Indian heads
Beach driving...
Johnny and Ciaran working on their tan...
Dingo visiting the campsite.

Well...I can let the pics go on forever. There is just so much to see on this beautiful island. But that's a little taste of it at least!

HAIL STORM

Publicerad 2012-11-18 11:15:18 i Allmänt,

"Mr Hall said the biggest hail stones reported to date were 9 centimetres in diameter around Boonah, though Mt Coot-tha, Bardon and Toowong pelted with stones up to the size of tennis-balls." /BNE times

YEP. Just came back from a 30min run with Cooper when the sky just went dark. Sitting on the balcony with Johnny and his friends, we could watch the dark grey clouds move closer and closer and all light just disapeared, although it was only 5pm. While all other dogs in the area went nuts, little Coop happily chased the hail balls that sprayed us on the balcony, eating them. Candles blew out, washing blew away, we got drained (although being under the roof) and lightning strikes where pretty intense!

The storm actually started already yday and, but I was up on the sunshine coast and didn't notice anything. However when coming back to bris, there were fallen trees all over the place. Even one of the massive fig trees in Davie's park had fallen (think like 6m diameter). Crazy stuff!

Here are some other pictures from Brisbane Times taken by residents around my area:

The worst seems to be over now though so hopefully it will be safe getting back onto the bike tomw morning!

HALLOWEEN 2012

Publicerad 2012-11-05 13:04:00 i Allmänt,

Have once again attended one of LG's famous halloween parties. Unfortunately, I didn't bring my camera this time but at least got a photo before heading over.
I got a few comments on how I could ruin such a nice dress with fake blood (long white dress). As it was Johnnys's old bed sheet I was wearing as a dress, I have now decided that if I would ever get married, I'll get married in some cheap IKEA bed sheets.
'
Other than attending halloween parties, I have once again been puppy sitting Coop all weekend as Johnny did a triathlon up in Noosa. Love my weekends with Coop=) Took a few runs, swim in the pool and watched a movie.

POOL DAY

Publicerad 2012-10-28 00:34:40 i Allmänt,

Last weekend, Cooper learnt how to sprint jump into the pool. And since then. He has basically played around like a seal in the water. During his first year on Earth, he was refusing to get into the pool himself and would only ever get in if he fell in (which happened quite often) or if any of us would carry him in. He sort of seemed to enjoy it whilst in though. However, last weekend, he found out how to get in himself and went in and out repeatedly. Only in order to be able to sprint from a long distance and land on his belly with a splash.
I can't believe that Coopa is gonna leave me in 6 weeks. Moving back to Ireland. He is like the biggest love of my life. I need to get a new dog... =(

ANOTHER YEAR DOWNUNDER

Publicerad 2012-10-25 23:21:44 i Allmänt,

Time flies hey!
Just realized that I have just filled another year downunder with adventures.
My first year may have been a bit more glamorous. But it's still downunder and I keep lovin it!

BRISBANE ZOMBIE WALK 2012

Publicerad 2012-10-23 23:30:20 i Allmänt,

Before you think this is too weird. It it. But it is also a world wide event. I saw some pictures from Stockholm zombie walk the other day that my friend forwarded to me so it's not only crazy australians who likes to dress up as dead people and then deadly walking around in the city in the most horror-movie movements.
Anyway, this is what it looked like when 5000 zombies entered Brisbane's streets on Saturday:
Yep. Pretty creepy. Me and Johnny were meant to just watch a movie later that night but felt that we got a big enough dose of both comedy and horror for the time being. It was actually scary! One dude scared the shit out of me when he jumped in front of my camera, roaring. I stumbled into Johnny who couldn't stop laughing. Entertaining. Whenever it happens in your city, go watch it!

SHEEP HERDING WITH LINDA AND TIM

Publicerad 2012-10-21 09:38:28 i Allmänt,

Had a very nice Saturday herding sheep with Linda and her little cuite Tim, 7 months old. She got him from this particular sheep dog farm on the countryside (although the wife in the family calls it "the city", as she originally lived in the desert up in Darwin). As old people like company the way they do, and as Les (the trainer) loves his dogs, they have basically invited Linda to come and train Tim whenever she wants. This adorable couple who have been married for 50 years are they cutest you can imagine. They will tell you the same story, at the same time, from their own perspective. So you have to be able to listen to two stories, told in a very broad Australian accent - at the same time. When this doesn't work. I guess it is enough to just smile and nod =)
'
Anyway, here are some pics from the so far hottest summer day of the season!
Tim is ready to hit the paddock!
In the tea-break (which we had to accept 10 min into training), I fell in love with Maggie, Tims great-great granma (16 years old and still going strong)
Linda is doing a good job out there. Only fell over twice. Once when she backed over a sheep and once when a sheep ran into her. Very entertaining to watch =)

KALLES RANDIGA

Publicerad 2012-10-19 23:56:00 i Allmänt,

=)

HOW I LOVE THIS

Publicerad 2012-10-15 12:52:26 i Allmänt,

This little cheeky dog reminds me so much of Cooper. We just have to teach him how to do that smile and life will never ever be boring again!

SNAKES AND SNAKE LIZARDS

Publicerad 2012-10-09 23:04:18 i Allmänt,

Warrie circuit for the second time in less than 3 months. This time with a bit more of wildlife. Spend some time posing with this python. And we also saw a snake lizard, of which I unfortunately did not get a picture of. But think something in style with...a short, fat, black snake - with legs and arms.
'
The rest of the weekend was mainly spent in the pool (as Sunday offered 35 degrees!!), in the yoga studio, at work and on a Canadian thanksgiving dinner with Laura and her bunch of Canadian friends.
So. Pretty decent weekend.

KOOKABURRA & MAGPIE

Publicerad 2012-10-06 00:22:52 i Allmänt,

I just Love the kookaburras!! This beautiful one was sitting outside my veranda the other morning, laughing and singing. Totally made my day!
A less awesome bird is the magpie who is attacking people all over the place. Especially cyclist. I have always laughed at people who are sticking sharp objects through their helmets, making them look like a hedgehog (accepted magpie protection). BUT. Believe it or not! Yesterday was the first time ever I got attacked by a magpie!! Sooo weired! Felt someone basically landing on my head while riding my bike to yoga class in the city. Took a while before I realized it was a magpie. Grrr! Just a light tough though, but you don't expect someone toughing your head when riding your bike. Maybe it's time for me to load up my helmet too soon...
'
Hiking time with Laura in Springbrook!
