I started this blog when I first went on an exchange to Brisbane, Australia. During that experience, I discovered my love for culture, travelling and adventures. This blog has followed me since and been my forum for pictures and stories from Tanzania, South Africa, Ireland, Fiji, Malaysia, Singapore, Europe etc.

MY LUCKY DAY

Publicerad 2013-10-21 05:46:17 i Allmänt,

Sunday was indeed my day (and the luck continues all week long). I spontaniously signed up to du Bribie Island supsersprint triathlon on Sunday, as I had nothing better to do. And guess what, I won my age group!

Swim (300m): 4.24min, Cat.pos 1(!!!) out of 9, Gender.pos 29/101
(Bribie island swims are always with the current and with the jelly fish!)
Cycle (10km) includint T1 and T2: 20.32, Cat.pos 1 out of 9, Gender pos 8/101
(Lots of turns)
Run (3km): 13.08, Cat pos 1 out of 9, Gender pos 14/101
TOTAL: 48.06, first in my age group, 9th overall!

I beat the second girl in my group with 6 minutes! However, it was a small group and all the good ones would have signed up to do the long course (750/20/5). But I am still happy!
The worst thing was that when I finally podium, there are no medals to win, but brown mugs! =*( A little flashback to when I won Traq 7km trailrun last August, instead of a medal, I got a beer glass! Can it be more dissapointing!?

Anyway, as soon as this had all become reality, my supervisor texted me saying my paper, after the revisions I did on Friday, had now been officially accpeted for publication, which means it will be accecible online within a few weeks (you can pubmed my name) =)

And as all things, good or bad, are meant to happen in 3s, I decided to sit out the lucky prize draw after the presentations and who wins a voucher for a 30min massage if not me!?

As everything seemed to go my way, I decided to go and buy a scratchie (typ trisslott) on my way to the supermarket later that day. Who knows how rich I would have become if only I would have remembered to actually buy one. Tired as I was, going to the supermarket with the intention to buy milk and scratchie, I came home with lots of other stuff but neither milk nor scratchie. So that is still a questionmark. But even so, I am very happy to see the training actually pay off!

PAPER ACCEPTED!

Publicerad 2013-10-18 00:11:37 i Allmänt,

GAAAAHHHHH! I've had a week when things have really been going my way. Please don't let it stop!

Sunday: New PB (personal best) for tri sprint distance by 5 min

Monday: Past MidCandidature with excellence

Wednesday: MY FIRST PAPER AS A FIRST AUTHOS GOT ACCEPTED FOR PUBLICATION!!!!!!!
For all non-science people out there, this may not seem very exciting, but believe me. IT IS! Getting a paper published is a never-ending process. You work your ass off for two years to create data of sufficiant quality. Most of the things along the way goes wrong and you have to re do it. You spend half a year trying to get your supervisor to read what you have done. She finally says, 'lets rewrite it this way'. You rewrite it. You submit it to a journal with too high impact factor and the reviewers takes 2 months to say "no, we do not want to publish this". You rewrite the whole manuscript to make it fit another journal and submit it again. The reviewers takes 3 months to say "yes, we will publish this, IF you can do the following experiments XXX which means another 5 years of work worth 1millionAUD". 'Third time lucky', Karen told me, and I rewrote the manuscript again and send it in for the third time. This time, after only a short month, the editor wrote back and said "YES WE WANT TO PUBLISH THIS PRETTY MUCH IN THE FORM IT IS". Just to give you an idea how happy I am...

But it doesn't end there...

Thursday: Something just made sense in the pool at squad training last night "poletten föll ner" as we say in Swedish and I all of a sudden started to swim 100m in 1.45, 1.44, 1.43(!!!!!), instead of my normal 1.50-1.57min. Not fast for some but fast for me.

In my moment of feeling invincible, I signed up for a sprint distance on Bribie on sunday, a fundarasing 5km fun run on thursday in two weeks and now i'm sitting here contemplating with myself wheter I should sign up for the half ironman in the middle of superhot Australia in Feb (Hell of the west).

However. The bad part for the week was the arrival of the electricity bill. Apparently our hot water system has been leaking straight out in the backyard for the last few months, which we had no idea about until the electricity bill landed as a bomb in our letter box. 1000AUD for 3 months instead of the normal 350. My bank account is crying.
Anyway, all the positives are weighing more!

MID CANDIDATURE

Publicerad 2013-10-17 00:02:22 i Allmänt,

Just realized I haven't posted many photos of the West End (best end) surroundings, so during y Monday recovery morning walk with Zelda, I brought my camera to snap some shots of the beautiful purple jaccaranda trees which are now in season. This is my old street before I moved to the street next to it =)
Standard morning route
Preparations for the yearly fundarasing duck race, in which thousands of bathtub ducks are floating along in the river and the owner of the first lucky one I think wins a car.
Zelda in her new swedish collar.
Good spot for a little rest...

So this is my happy hippie community i which I live.

Also, how could I forget to tell you! (Probably because I was too excited about my last triathlon). On Monday, I did my Mid Candidature presentation for my confirmation panel and lab group, which is the second milestone in an Australian PhD. You basically write a small report on where you are and how things are going etc and have an oral presetation with a following intervju. I passed with excellence and was just told to keep doing what I am already doing, so that was all good. Last milestone is Thesis review so now I can really start to count down!

GATORADE SERIES 2

Publicerad 2013-10-15 02:43:59 i Allmänt,

First triathlon since I got back done and dusted. It was the second time I did this course and I improved my time from 1.03 to 57.48, so that was very exciting!
Getting ready for the swim leg (I'm the red cap top right).

Changing to bike...
Close to finish 15km on the bike...
Finish line pic.

Breakdowns on this race was:
Swim (400m): 7.47 (22 out of 40)
Bike (15km including transitions): 32.17 (4 out of 40!!!)
Run (4km): 17.44 (12 out of 40)
Total: 57min48sek which gave me a 9th place out of 40 in my category

Competition here is on a much higher level than back home, which encourages you to get even better! Although my swimtime actually improved by 2-3 minutes since the last time I did this course, it's still a bit of a joke compared to the water-born aussies.

Anyway, I wanted to be under one hour and I was so I am happy with that and can't wait for the next race!

YONANA

Publicerad 2013-10-12 01:21:30 i Allmänt,

Last week, I did for me two life-changing investments.
  1. I bought a GPS for my car so that I no longer have to get lost every single time I go for a drive. It is very exciting and will most likely save me a lot of fuel money for driving around trying to find my way back =)

  2. I bought a YONANA and I cannot express in words what a wonderful kitchen machine this is. I think every household should own one. (Have they made their way to Sweden yet?? If not, this one will move home with me). A yonana makes ice cream out of frozen fruit and it is so delicious! So far, I've only tried with frozen berries, bananas and pinapples, but it can do anything! Just peel and chop the fruit and freeze it for at least 20hrs, then you just put it in the yonana and out comes delicious ice-cream like fruit sorbet. Gaahhh! Yonana, where have you been all my life!? Can even put frozen nuts and chocolate etc to make it more desert like. (I sound like a salesman now but I'm just so in love with this!).
Other than that, this week has been busy with work, dental appointments and training. I have my first triathlon since I got back down under tomw morning and the weather forecast is not promising (as always). But I am really excited and looking forward to it! Fingers crossed everyone!

Before that, my friend Martina is turning 30 and is hosting a potluck BBQ down the river. And as I am so proud of my little bday gift to her (as I made it myself) I will post it here =)
I promise it looks nicer in real life than on the pic. Collected lots of nice little stones from the beach in Coffs Harbour and wrote inspiring on positive words on them. The idea is to randomly draw a stonde from the glass bowl every day and let its message influence the day. I hope she will like it =)

Now. I am going to wash my car, wash my (3) bikes, oil their little chains, prepare for tri, clean my room, freeze fruit and make a fruit sallad for the potluck. All in 3hrs!

ROADTRIP IN A CAMPERVAN

Publicerad 2013-10-08 23:53:20 i Allmänt,

Solnedgång vs soluppgång i Byron bay.
Resesällskap (tidig morgon i Byron Bay)

WEEKEND TIME

Publicerad 2013-10-01 13:05:50 i Allmänt,

BACK ON TRACK

Publicerad 2013-09-24 13:04:24 i Allmänt,

Zelda says Hi too!

SWEDEN PART 2

Publicerad 2013-09-01 22:14:18 i Allmänt,

And apart from competing in Kalmar mini tri (placed 9 out of 256 females) myself...
I watched Kalmar ironman from early start until the last brave finisher crossed the line after almost 16hrs.

Apart from that
we made time for some unsuccesful fishing...
...ran into elephants in Trekanten...
...consumed the yearly crumble at Kullzenska with my fav ladies...
...baby sat a bit more...
...spent an evening i Skutaryd
Went bluberry and lingon berry picking with dad...
...walked a lot...
...puppy sat the RSCPA dog Yla
Pulled out 2 wisdom teeth and was (and still is) forced to eat a massive amount of painkillers and mashed food.
went walking with Elin on Lovstaklipporna.

More or less.
I loved my time in Sweden. Maybe a little too much and I'm starting to think of what to do when my PhD is over. I guess only time will tell but the thought that I might move back home-home does not seem quite as strange anymore...

SWEDEN PART 1

Publicerad 2013-09-01 21:51:16 i Allmänt,

I started to write about my holidays a while ago but I never got around to post it and now it has almost reached an end so instead of writing a long boring novel, let's make a picture update:
First out was picnic with Linda on the pier, Djurgarden before the tallest man on earth were playing on Grona Lund. Extremely good timing for my homecoming as I really love his music!
Tallest man on earth on the stage...
 Strandvagen early evening
Gran's 91st birthday was celebrated with a walk to the letterbox and back <3
Also had time for a few real swedish bbqs
Spent countless hours babysitting my best ever friends baby and I hate the fact that I wont be there every single day of her first year on Earth to see her grow =(
Many other hours were spend with these three wonderful guys on the beach, in the sea house, consuming massive amounts of coffee, ironman spectating etc etc.

(to be continued)

CATCH UPS

Publicerad 2013-07-30 23:58:36 i Allmänt,

Flew into Ireland after my conference week in Birmingham to catch up with Roisin and Johnny and most importantly Coopie =))
The weather has honestly been pretty crap (or Irish) with a perfectly blue looking sky early morning, which has turned into thunderstorms and pissing rain within seconds. Bit like april-weather.
The photo above was taken at Sliege cliffs today in Donegal minutes before the rain started to pour on us. Happy looking coops!

On a sunnier day (back in Dublin), me Roisin and her friend Karen walked on the cliffs from onw little town to another (Bray to Greystone).

Me and Johnny also took some time to practice our balance in pretty windy and rough SUP-conditions...

Sharing a guinness with an old lad on sweeney's.

So. I thought I was going home tomw. App Im not going home until Thursday so Johnny will have to entertain me for one more day. (Lucky I checked my ticket as Dublin airport is 4hrs away from here). Fingers crossed for no rain!

IUPS 2013

Publicerad 2013-07-22 20:55:25 i Allmänt,

So I have now survived the first two days of the conference. I always struggle to socialize with old and grey professors that have spent their whole life in isolation, researching a tiny enzyme which converts A to B. The man at the opening cermonie looked like Einstein, but with brushed hair. And abt 100 years older.
The talks today have generally been quite good but it's quite hard to sit still for 7hrs trying to focus on things you (a lot of the time) have no idea what they are. Especially when a day starts at 8am and finishes at 8.30pm and they do not provide you with any snack OR coffee or tea AT ALL for the entire day. How do they honestly expect you to stay awake? And what did they do with all the money of people registering? Hm. the conferences I've been to until now have overdosed you with coffee, tea, frui, chocolate, sweets and have had really good lunch. I wonder if this is a UK thing or an IUPS thing...
Anyway, Birmingham has miles and miles of canals, ehich are extremely beautiful (at least for someone who is not used to the typical Brittish style of housing and environment). I've been running along those canals the first two days. First time, during mid day, which resulted in plenty of weird looks on me. Apparantly, brittish people do not exercise. So today I ran in the morning instead, which was much better =)
This sort of view just goes on and on and on...

Anyway, tomw is my poster presentation and I am super tired after today, so although its probably still bright outside (I dont know cuz I dont have a window!!), Im hitting the sack.

IN BIRMINGHAM

Publicerad 2013-07-20 17:11:50 i Allmänt,

This may have been the longest and worst travel for me. And I have travelled between Australia and Sweden 5 times...
Had a few great days in Oz before I left. Great but stressful. Packed last minute, cleaned up my room and packed all my stuff as I found someone to rent it short term. Almost brought Zelli with me as well. Also went full out on training sessions with friends, celebrated Jamie's PhD graduation and (almost) submitted my first paper.

Then took off. I though I had to wait 8 hrs in Spore but it turned out to be only 3. On the other hand, I had to wait 7hrs in Frankfurt. Ive only been to Frankfurt airport once and that was 10 years ago. Nothing has happened. It was one of the most boring airports ever, even worse than Helsinki. For the flight, I had booked GF/veggie food which had got lost in the system so although the first lady was very helpful and found me some food, I hardly couldnt eat anything from Spore and onwards. (Not even in Frankfurt as everything was closed or inside the gates I couldnt access). Anyway, I managed to sleep quite a bit so wasn't too hungry.

The most interesting thing with this flight however, was my feet. I would upload the pic but my phone doesnt allow me to transfer it. They were so swollen! I have never had swollen feet on a plane before, they looked hillarious! Couldn't even squeeze them into my flip flops without getting marks from the striped. So now, after finally locating my hotel (which believe it or not are smaller than my suitcase (except for the bed), which means I can't actually open my suitcase at all)...ive been lying with feet on the wall for abt an hour to get the blood down. Despite that, they still look swollen. Weird.

Anyway, Im struggling, gonna have a nap and then see if the police helicopters and 20 shielded policemen that were chasing someone outside (Bham repurtition true??) are  done so I can go out and find some food.

MORETON BAY GRAND PRIX

Publicerad 2013-07-15 02:10:14 i Allmänt,

So. I won my age group in my first ever duathlon, Moreton Bay Grand Prix-13. Woot!
Was quite a rainy morning, as it normally is on race day. We drove up to Moreton Bay Lakeside where the duathlon took place on a race course for cars. How nice to race on proper ground, and not have to worry about bad roads, cars and stupid people who decides to walk straight out in the road.
Quite a few Southbankers were up racing but it wasn't a massive competition.
The course was 2km run, 9.4km ride, 1.7km run, 9.4km ride, 1.7km run. It may not seem very hard but with shorter distances like that you just have to sprint the whole way, which makes the transition between cycle and run very hard. The official times haven't been published yet but my Garmin stopped on 1.02.00. Preferably I would have wanted to be under 1hr but I can't complain.

Jamie (pic above) came 4th overall and just missed out on the few hundred dollars the top podium positions offered. So he wasn't as happy as me to win his age group.
Crossing the finish line.

4 more sleeps...

OH HAPPY DAYS!

Publicerad 2013-07-12 05:32:38 i Allmänt,

Why does Zeldie have such a big smile on her face?
Well, maybe because Australian winter has warmed up enough to do SUP-boarding without a wet suit! Not that she would care too much about that but still...

I have exactly one week to organize everything that needs to be organized before my trip. Trying to rent out my room (will most likely not succeed), sumbitting my first ever paper, preparing posters for international conferences, training for a duathlon (which is on Sunday yay!), packing, washing, cleaning and all those fun sort of stuff.....etc.

7 breakies to go..! The most sad thing about this is that after 4 years in Oz, I have only just discovered Milo. Milo is a type of chocolate powder but it is healthy and tastes AMAZING! And it goes on top of whatever breakie you have. So. Only 7 more Milo-breakies...
No, thats not good enough! I'm loading up my suitcase!

NEW PB'S!

Publicerad 2013-07-06 06:40:42 i Allmänt,

I've had a pretty crazy training week with lots of new PBs (personal best) in both distance and time.

For example, (PB1) I swam 3300m (in a 25m pool!) in one session (total 8300m over 3 days), resulting in dead arms and sore shoulders, in a good way. Best 100m in a 25 pool (PB2) was 1.33min!
PB3 was achieved today at park run, after not running a solid 5km in 3 weeks, I smashed it on 22.31, placing 6 out of 109F, (42 overall out of 258) and 2nd in my age group.

I also got convinced to sign up for a duathlon (only run and bike) the Sunday before my Eurotrip. So now I'm very happy to have a race to look forward to. And speaking of Eurotrip, its only 13 breakfasts left!

Will miss my little shadow, who blends so well into my bed, so much but very much looking forward to come home for a while =)

SWEDISH TO ENGLISH - word by word

Publicerad 2013-06-27 11:31:38 i Allmänt,

Sometimes, when translating word by word from swedish to english, things sort of looses its meaning. I love expressions like that though and have collected them for a little while.
Here are some of my favourites:

Träsmak i ändan word by word becomes Wood taste in the bum.
We use it when we have been sitting down for too long, eg. Oh, I have to get up, I'm starting to get wood taste in my bum! Funny!

Jordgubbar (=strawberries) but becomes little earthmen when translating word by word.

Visa framfötterna becomes Show your front feet
Used when showing of ones talent, eg at work, Get up there and show your front feet!

För allt smör i Småland (=for all the butter in Småland (a Swedish district)) is used when there is something you wouldn't do in a million years.
Eg. I wouldn't do that for all the butter in Småland!

Is i magen (=ice in the stomach) means you are very calm.

Smaken är som baken - delad! (=taste is like a butt - divided!)
Essentially means “Oh, it’s a matter of taste…” or “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder…”

Köpa grisen i säcken = Buy the pig in the sack
Is used when you are buying something you haven't seen yet and it's often a bad idea.

Färgglad = Colour-happy
Used when something is painted with a lot of different colours for example.

Brun som en pepparkaksgubbe = Brown as a ginger bread man
Is what a Swede is always aiming for when travelling abroad, you HAVE to come home "as brown as a ginger bread man" otherwise people will doubt that you have been away at all.

Lugn som en filbunke = Calm as the bowl you cultivate yoghurt in
Is simply used to describe an extremely calm person!'

Bära hundhuvudet = Carry the dog's head
The person who has to carry the dog's head is the person to blame for whatever reason.

Håll i hatten! = Hold on to the hat!
Used for when something big or exciting is about to happen, eg. Hold on to the hat, its all happening!

Killen hela dagen = The boy all day
If you are the boy all day, you are simply a great boy, good at everything! Who wouldn't want to be the boy all day??

Hej kom och hjälp mig! = Hello come and help me!
Is used for something thats really messy, eg, your mum would have told you repeatedly, "Come and clean your room NOW, it looks like hello come and help me!"

Jag är inte den som är den = I am not that person who is that person
This is sort of hard to explain. I guess we normally use it as an answer eg,
-Are you coming to town or not?
-Well yeah, im not that person who is that person.
Weird...

Klart som korvspadAs clear as the left over water after boiling sausages
Is used when something is really obvious, eg, As clear as the left over water after boiling sausages, I'm coming to his party! (=Orcourse I'm coming to his party!)

Rund under fötterna = Round beneath the feet
This expression sort of explains itself. You get round underneath your feet when you are drinking too much alcoholic bevareges.

På något vänster = On something left
Essentially means "in one way or another" eg, It will be a bit tricky, but on something left we can do it!

Här blir det inga barn gjorda = It's not a great lot of child production going on here
Can for example be used in a too long coffe break at work, eg, its not a great lot of childproduction happening here, let's go back to work!

Grönsaker = Green things
Litterarily means vegetables

Solkatt = Sun cat
Which is a reflection created by for instance a watch on the wall. Ah, bring your arm down, your watch is creating sun cats in my eyes! haha!

Fun stuff!
Maybe I should start to collect the english version and translate it into Swedish as well...

SBTC AWARDS NIGHT

Publicerad 2013-06-19 11:36:06 i Allmänt,

Imagine putting 200 tri athlets that haven't been drinking for about half a year (tri season) together in a surf club with endless bar tabs. Also, imagine 3 girls, who only owns training clothes and havent used make up in months, getting dressed up together. Well, that's what I entertained myself with last Saturday.
This was the result of the night:

Admittedly, it was FREEZING cold towards the night and I scored a suit from my friend Terry who had to be cold instead of me. More importantly, I scored a race entry in the lucky door price draw to Kingscliff triathlon (worth 105AUD) and I was about to sign up anyway. So that's great! The evening offered priced worth 4000AUD from sponsors. I really am in love with this club!

Anyway. Wednesday morning. I went for a 40km bike ride before work.Alarm set on 5am. And I know you will all be laughing now, but it was freezing! I felt my toes were cold towards the end of the ride. Went home, had coffee and breakie and tried to get Zelda to sit on my feet to warm them up, which she didnt, and my feet did not warm up.Cycled in to work and could hardly stand on my poor feet. Took socks off and discovered my poor toes were totally hypothermic! They were like twice the size and white! No warm blood in them whatsoever! My workmate was tapping my toes and asked if I could feel anything. But no! Honeslty, this wasn't even comparable to quing in Ullared at winter or running barefoot in the snow for 2 hrs. Poor toes were full on hypothermic and it took them 2hrs to recover and get the colour and function back. WTF Australia?!
Lucky me having a scandinavian holiday around the corner!

SUP

Publicerad 2013-06-12 09:59:54 i Allmänt,

SUP can mean other things than a drink in Swedish. It also refers to Stand up Paddle Boarding, which I tried for the first time on Monday. Being terrified of waves, I really enjoyed this type of surfing. It took Marc 2 minutes to explain how to get up, and up I was!
Doesn't matter if it's pissing down on Queens Bday when you can entertain yourself with activities like this.
Oh, and as I missed Monday morning yoga class, I also took the opportunity to practice some yoga on the board. It may look easy but I can ensure you it was damn hard!
Marc is going full out with insect pose! Cred!
Lower plank.
I think I will have to buy my own SUPboard eventually. Great fun!

My knee seem to get better. Improved my parkrun result to 23.42 for last weekends 5km. Still going barefoot. Last week, that was enough to place 10 out of 117F and second in my age group. I still got to work it down till 21 before I'm satisfied.

Now it's about time for me to head down to the archive and say goodbye to my friend Fabrice who is moving to Africa after finishing his PhD in marine sciences. Good for him!
