BANANA PRICE DROP

Publicerad 2011-11-29 22:52:49 i Allmänt,

The consequenses after the flooding was an extreme increase in banana kilo price. I think it went up as high as AUD20 just afterwards and had dropped to somewhere between 9-12AUD when I got back (abt 9 months later). Yesterday however, I had the biggest surprise when Coles had a massive sale on bananas, only 3AUD each! So I just enjoyed my first banana in 6 weeks. Pretty nice!
Sort of understand why Luke (my old housemate who visited me in sweden a few months ago) craved for all our bananas now. Hope it stays like this!!
'
Yesterday, my first box of three arrived to my friend's Beau's house. Amazing to get some stuff over, but very worrying that only 1 out of 3 arrived. Too bad as well that the arriving one didn't contain any clothes since I start to get bored f wearing the same 3 clothes every day. Crossing my fingers the rest of the boxes will appear later this week. Prefferably today.
'
Also went to see the new Twillight movie last night with Lauren. Figured abt 5 min into the movie that I missed the 3rd one. Thought this was the third one. Must have been in africa when it was released. So much of a twillight fan that I am..huh!

SECOND DEGREE BURN..

Publicerad 2011-11-28 11:17:40 i Allmänt,

I don't know what's going on with me. Maybe I am just tired but I keep dropping things. Today, I managed to pour abt 300ml boiling water from the kettle on my leg in an attempt to fill up my coffee mug. So James and I have now diagnosed my leg to have a second degree burn but unaffected capillaries. (Btw, the horrible tan my leg seems to have is just the flash thank godness!) At the second attempt, I managed to actually pour the water in the cup. My housemate Ian is blaming the humidity. It has been a very hot day. Hmm...

MOUNT MEE

Publicerad 2011-11-27 09:48:23 i Allmänt,

Beau and I had been looking forward a long time to do our next hike for so long. But the day sort of turn out to be a bit of a dissapointment thanks to the queensland govnerment's ability to give out detailed road descriptions and the GPS lady voice in Beau's phone. Not cool. We picked Mount Mee just because it wasn't meant to be too far away from Bnr city centre and the webpage said we could get there in one hr. It took us abt 3 hrs to find the start of the track. However according to the webpage you would be able to reach the summit without a 4WD. Which wasn't exactly true...
The road only became worse after this so we had to park and hike the last 5 k to the summit. And the trail we were gonna take would be another 13 k on top of that. And. It was freakin hot since we didnt manage to start until 13 instead of like 10 which was the plan. So we walked along the road for a while. Saw a not very extraordinary waterfall and some wild life...

And on the way back, we found a pretty nice water hole (altough a snake was swimming around in it on the other side, it was just too hot ant too tempting not to...)
Dissaointing hike. Had higher expectations than we should have had. But still. Everything ends up to be the way you make them so it was still a very fun day!!

WHOOPING COUGH

Publicerad 2011-11-23 22:24:00 i Allmänt,

Thursday morning. It's scary how fast the weekdays pass by. Sitting here, drinking my morning coffee and believe it or not but it's raining outside. It's the first time since I came back it's actually raining. Refreshing. My bike will have to face the wet cold weather for the first time in its life! Poor Berry Blue!
'
Second news. Em got whooping cough. Very nasty... After sharing waterbottle with Kris at squash. Expensive game. Grrr! Actually, Im not sure I have it but he did and I started to cough just the other day so went to the doctor. He was really surprised that a scandinavian country had a big gap in their immunization program regarding whooping cough and that I actually never got vaccinated. So he gave me antibiotics (Australias favourite medicine against everything!), which I only accepted to take in case I have it and would infect others since it's pretty contagious. At least not contagous when on it. Hmm...

Third. Two weeks till next swedish visitors arrive. Looking forward to very much =))
Time for work!

BRISBANE WALK

Publicerad 2011-11-20 12:02:28 i Allmänt,

Was a loooong day with lots and lots of walking and running when Em took Johan on a sightsing tour in Bne. Walked the hilly way to my uni, old house, old unit, Brisbane city, Botanical Gardens, Southbank and back to west end with a detour to Coles supermarket. Oh...did I mentioned we ran in the morning as well? Legs hurt...
But look at this beautiful tree!
Johan took the bus back to Sydney at 5 this morning. Same time as my friend Anna called me to invite me to a street festival in Highgate hill. After all this walkning, I just wanted to lay down in my bed but since most of my friends are gone, socialising seemed like a good idea.
And yeah. It really was a street festival. A whole neighbour hood turned their houses in to a free festival right on the street. Stages in people's house's cellars and verandas. People sitting on the street. And in other people's gardens. Very cute. And very hippie...
Wonder if we could turn a street into a festival in the Stockholm rush hour? =) Would be fun to try!

SWEDISH WEEKEND

Publicerad 2011-11-19 11:23:23 i Allmänt,

Been a very Swedish weekend with Swedish visitors and Kalles Kaviar on the morning eggs. An early morning to visit the West end market (which is just around the corner from now on, awesome!!) and then Broadbeach to support many of my friends who participated in a beach volley boll competition. And look who where with me!!

Pretty decent breakie after some shopping on west end saturday morning market...

Friends team at the vb court on Gold coast

Swedish company!! Johan, Lovisa and myself. Very good saturday!

MY MESS

Publicerad 2011-11-17 22:29:04 i Allmänt,

Since I haven't uploaded any photos in a while, I thought I could show you a pic of my extremely messy room. Got the desk in the corner for 10AUD on gumtree. The base of the bed is sort of triangle shaped and I dont have any shelfs or drawers to my defence. Working on it!
'
My brain is completely programmed on rat nutrition right now. It is very frustrating and upsetting designing a diet for my babies since it's hard to get all the nutrients the same for controls and alcohol exposed dams. One could think being a nutritionist could help in this but....hmm, not really! If the nutrients are perfect, then the diet is too thick and will get stuck in the bottle etc. Tough life!
'
Well. Im getting in early to work since I get even more Swedish visitors today. 3 in 3 weeks. Let it continue like this!

UPDATES

Publicerad 2011-11-14 22:51:32 i Allmänt,

It has been a while. Finally moved in to my new house. Im currently trying to fill it with furnitures since it was basically nothing at all in it (except a really crap bed which Im not going to sleep on for 3 years). I have't had a good bed for 2 years and decided now that it's time to get one. (Thanks mum for the contribution!).
Went to IKEA last weekend to find out that all the prices were twice as expensive on all the furnitures. One could argue that Swedish people should get a discount but they didn't even let me use my Swedish IKEA family card. Not ok! Bought Lingon berry and Kalles Kaviar instead of a bed. Not too bad!
'
It's getting really hot here now. Spend the whole Saturday morning in a pool, just floating around. Nice, but Im a bit to hyperactive not doing anything so went to play squash in the aternoon. On Sunday, I got a Swedish visitor, Lovisa and her friend. Had a nice sushi lunch in the city and send them off to my friend Mick's house in Noosa for some tropical beach hang. Hope they dont like it too much so they still will come back to Bris later this week!

Work time!

MONDAY

Publicerad 2011-11-07 10:47:04 i Allmänt,

Have finally started to sort things out. Firstly, my bike Berry Blue brought me to uni in no time this morning and I didn't even have to stand up in the hills. Sunshine. Bird song. Early morning. And being able to ride the bike to work every day. That is happiness!
'
Second. I have finally made a decision of moving in to this very beautiful Queenslander (Villervillakulla look alike) in West End. My room will be just behind the front veranda and I am just in the process of signing leases etc. Feels very good and I think the three of us will get along really well. Plus! Just found out that one of my really good friends lives on the same street, just a few houses from mine! Additionally, the house in front of ours has a cute little dog that usually hangs out on our veranda, big PLUS!
'
Getting more and more into work as well. In the beginning I spend most of the time doing litterature research and learning techiques. Today for examples, I was cutting embedded sheep kidneys in 5nm thick slices in the histology lab for 2 hrs. Tough work when the sun is shining outside and the sky is as blue as Berry blue! Summer is coming!

BIKE OWNER

Publicerad 2011-11-05 05:57:37 i Allmänt,

Now it's mine!
One decision down and I'm a bike owner to Berry Blue (Beau and I gave him a name on the way home). He is awesome so far and will be my fellow friend for a time now. Happy!

HELP!!

Publicerad 2011-11-03 11:45:41 i Allmänt,

Sometimes it feels like there are too many choices in life. I mean. Just picking a pack of milk is insane! And I have three really big choices to make right now of which all are of greater importance than the milk bottle.
  1. FIND A HOUSE
Firstly, I have just been looking into short terms accomodation cause I wanted to find a place with Soph whenever she returnes from Canada. However I start to doubt if it is a good idea to live with your best friend and even if it would be, it seems pretty hard to find a decent short term rental. AND. I would have to do the whole process of finding a house again and probably fill it with furnitures etc etc. My economy might not hold for that atm. So. When starting to look into long term accomodations, I have found two places I really like.
1.1 PIPPI LONGSTOCKING HOUSE: Very colourfull tidy and clean. Located behind another house on a very quiet street with 3 parking spots (for whenever I get a car). 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. Two guys living there now, one is 28 doing his masters (could prob get along very well) one is 31 and works (prob do play a bit too much tv-games). I wouldnt be best friends with these guys but they would make good enough housemates. Awesome location. Negative things: I would have to go on the lease (6months) which would rule out the possibility of me and Soph finding a place together. No furnitures in the bedroom.
1.2 GREAT QUEENSLANDER: Just looked at it. Its a BEAUTIFUL house! Perfect location. Owned by a 38 year old aussie who is really into fitness (he lives there too). Then there is a 27yo german girl (really nice, but will move out in 3 months time) and a 24 year old australian girl. So. 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. Slightly cheaper than the other house (including a cleaner who comes every second week). Wouldn't have to go on the lease which makes it easier to move out (one month notice). Non through road = no traffic. Has a cat named Wombat who I cuddled with a lot to see if I would be allergic, nothing yet! No furnitures in the bedroom.

  2. BUY A BIKE
    2.1 BIKE 1: Either this one: http://www.merida.com.au/2011-bikes/fitness/speeder-series/speeder-t1.htm
    2.2 BIKE 2: Or this one: http://www.merida.com.au/2011-bikes/fitness/speeder-series/speeder-s2.htm

  3. CHOOSE A PROJECT
This one is killing me since it is such a big comittment. I am in a very lucky position where I as a PhD student actually can choose what I want to do. Not many people could do that...
3.1 PERICONCEPTIONAL ETHANOL EXPOSURE: Def my area of interest! Basically feeding rats with alcohol prior to pregnancy (not during as my master research was). Then make them pregnant and then analyse the metabolic effects on their offspring in adult life. Noone has ever done this! So it could be very exciting. However its hard to expect things and compare with others ofcourse... Good things: Project will be on rats, Id be the one responsible for it saying that I can do whatever I want to and only affect myself. Bad things: I would be on my own. Which means ten times more work. And the project doesnt have funding. Bad timing. Karen will apply for funding this year but it will take a year to put throgh. She says she probably will have enough money for it anyway but she coudlnt hire a research assistant that could work with it with me.
3.2 PERICONCEPTIONAL MATERNAL HYPOXIA: I struggle to relate to this project. I cant see this event happen in real life and therefore I loose interest. Feels like such a bigger commitment since I am not as interested in it. Good thing. The projet is already going and it has 3 years funding already. A lot of people are working on it which means a lot of support, probably more publications and quicker process. Bad thing: Its on mice (i prefer rats) and my experiments wouldn't be prioritized.

I know this is a lot of text but I hope at least someone could stand reading at least something on it cause I really need some good advice here!

VILLA VILLERKULLA

Publicerad 2011-11-01 07:27:08 i Allmänt,

My house hunting is an ever lasting story. It goes on and on and on and its hard to find something decent. It's either too pricy or too disgusting. Today however, I am on my way to have a look at a neat little house in west end that looks like Pippi Long stockings house. I am very excited since most things about it seems good. So cross your fingers that the housemates will be normal as well. My PhD fellow Lee suggested Id dress up as Pippi Longstocking to actually match the house. Temptning. But probably not a very good idea.
Will also have a quick look at 99 bikes to see if I can find a bike which is able to make the hills both up and down, since the one that I am currently riding cant make either. No brakes and broken gears. Should be pretty easy replacable I guess. (Mum, Dad, can I get a bike for christmas?) =))
'
Ok. It's time to go. Crossing fingers!
