SWEDISH TO ENGLISH - word by word

Publicerad 2013-06-27 11:31:38 i Allmänt,

Sometimes, when translating word by word from swedish to english, things sort of looses its meaning. I love expressions like that though and have collected them for a little while.
Here are some of my favourites:

Träsmak i ändan word by word becomes Wood taste in the bum.
We use it when we have been sitting down for too long, eg. Oh, I have to get up, I'm starting to get wood taste in my bum! Funny!

Jordgubbar (=strawberries) but becomes little earthmen when translating word by word.

Visa framfötterna becomes Show your front feet
Used when showing of ones talent, eg at work, Get up there and show your front feet!

För allt smör i Småland (=for all the butter in Småland (a Swedish district)) is used when there is something you wouldn't do in a million years.
Eg. I wouldn't do that for all the butter in Småland!

Is i magen (=ice in the stomach) means you are very calm.

Smaken är som baken - delad! (=taste is like a butt - divided!)
Essentially means “Oh, it’s a matter of taste…” or “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder…”

Köpa grisen i säcken = Buy the pig in the sack
Is used when you are buying something you haven't seen yet and it's often a bad idea.

Färgglad = Colour-happy
Used when something is painted with a lot of different colours for example.

Brun som en pepparkaksgubbe = Brown as a ginger bread man
Is what a Swede is always aiming for when travelling abroad, you HAVE to come home "as brown as a ginger bread man" otherwise people will doubt that you have been away at all.

Lugn som en filbunke = Calm as the bowl you cultivate yoghurt in
Is simply used to describe an extremely calm person!'

Bära hundhuvudet = Carry the dog's head
The person who has to carry the dog's head is the person to blame for whatever reason.

Håll i hatten! = Hold on to the hat!
Used for when something big or exciting is about to happen, eg. Hold on to the hat, its all happening!

Killen hela dagen = The boy all day
If you are the boy all day, you are simply a great boy, good at everything! Who wouldn't want to be the boy all day??

Hej kom och hjälp mig! = Hello come and help me!
Is used for something thats really messy, eg, your mum would have told you repeatedly, "Come and clean your room NOW, it looks like hello come and help me!"

Jag är inte den som är den = I am not that person who is that person
This is sort of hard to explain. I guess we normally use it as an answer eg,
-Are you coming to town or not?
-Well yeah, im not that person who is that person.
Weird...

Klart som korvspadAs clear as the left over water after boiling sausages
Is used when something is really obvious, eg, As clear as the left over water after boiling sausages, I'm coming to his party! (=Orcourse I'm coming to his party!)

Rund under fötterna = Round beneath the feet
This expression sort of explains itself. You get round underneath your feet when you are drinking too much alcoholic bevareges.

På något vänster = On something left
Essentially means "in one way or another" eg, It will be a bit tricky, but on something left we can do it!

Här blir det inga barn gjorda = It's not a great lot of child production going on here
Can for example be used in a too long coffe break at work, eg, its not a great lot of childproduction happening here, let's go back to work!

Grönsaker = Green things
Litterarily means vegetables

Solkatt = Sun cat
Which is a reflection created by for instance a watch on the wall. Ah, bring your arm down, your watch is creating sun cats in my eyes! haha!

Fun stuff!
Maybe I should start to collect the english version and translate it into Swedish as well...

SBTC AWARDS NIGHT

Publicerad 2013-06-19 11:36:06 i Allmänt,

Imagine putting 200 tri athlets that haven't been drinking for about half a year (tri season) together in a surf club with endless bar tabs. Also, imagine 3 girls, who only owns training clothes and havent used make up in months, getting dressed up together. Well, that's what I entertained myself with last Saturday.
This was the result of the night:

Admittedly, it was FREEZING cold towards the night and I scored a suit from my friend Terry who had to be cold instead of me. More importantly, I scored a race entry in the lucky door price draw to Kingscliff triathlon (worth 105AUD) and I was about to sign up anyway. So that's great! The evening offered priced worth 4000AUD from sponsors. I really am in love with this club!

Anyway. Wednesday morning. I went for a 40km bike ride before work.Alarm set on 5am. And I know you will all be laughing now, but it was freezing! I felt my toes were cold towards the end of the ride. Went home, had coffee and breakie and tried to get Zelda to sit on my feet to warm them up, which she didnt, and my feet did not warm up.Cycled in to work and could hardly stand on my poor feet. Took socks off and discovered my poor toes were totally hypothermic! They were like twice the size and white! No warm blood in them whatsoever! My workmate was tapping my toes and asked if I could feel anything. But no! Honeslty, this wasn't even comparable to quing in Ullared at winter or running barefoot in the snow for 2 hrs. Poor toes were full on hypothermic and it took them 2hrs to recover and get the colour and function back. WTF Australia?!
Lucky me having a scandinavian holiday around the corner!

SUP

Publicerad 2013-06-12 09:59:54 i Allmänt,

SUP can mean other things than a drink in Swedish. It also refers to Stand up Paddle Boarding, which I tried for the first time on Monday. Being terrified of waves, I really enjoyed this type of surfing. It took Marc 2 minutes to explain how to get up, and up I was!
Doesn't matter if it's pissing down on Queens Bday when you can entertain yourself with activities like this.
Oh, and as I missed Monday morning yoga class, I also took the opportunity to practice some yoga on the board. It may look easy but I can ensure you it was damn hard!
Marc is going full out with insect pose! Cred!
Lower plank.
I think I will have to buy my own SUPboard eventually. Great fun!

My knee seem to get better. Improved my parkrun result to 23.42 for last weekends 5km. Still going barefoot. Last week, that was enough to place 10 out of 117F and second in my age group. I still got to work it down till 21 before I'm satisfied.

Now it's about time for me to head down to the archive and say goodbye to my friend Fabrice who is moving to Africa after finishing his PhD in marine sciences. Good for him!

BROKE MY FIRST 100!

Publicerad 2013-06-10 00:24:13 i Allmänt,

Around 50 dedicated Southbankers woke up to light sprinkle, waiting for the call to see if the ride was on or not. The radar showing the rain told us it was. So a bunch of us met up at usual meeting place. Although the winter has come, it was surprisingly warm yday (17 degrees!!) so no need for extra leg warmers etc.
Rode out to beautiful Cleveland point via an extended loop. So lots of river front. Stopped for a well deserved coffee, although me and Mark, who have been craving carrot cake for a whole week, got one of those.
(Im in the middle if you cant find me)
Most importantly for this ride, I broke the 100km! 3hrs54min (including a bunch of traffic lights). Very happy with that!
11am nap after the ride in my onzee. And Zel had the longest and deepest nap of us all, as if she just went for a 100km ride as well huh!
'
I've also had this adorable little creature to cuddle this weekend, which certainly deserves a few pictures as well:
Someone couldn't stay awake during movie night...
'
Anyway. Its queens birthday today, its pissing down so no ride, but most likely a little tour on a stand up paddle board. Sometime's gotta be the first!

LONG WEEKEND!

Publicerad 2013-06-07 05:29:38 i Allmänt,

I don't know how often it is Queen's birthday (=public holiday) but it seem to happen a few times a year in this country. So assumingly the queen must be ridicilously old, at least 300 years or so...
It's Friday arvo in the office and I've just handed over my first paper draft to supervisors. Working hard on getting this paper published before my Eurotrip.

The weekend will consist of a big dose of crazy puppy love, as I will be puppysitting 14wks old Shakta, if the weather allow, my first 100km ride and perhaps a nice little park run on Saturday morning. Nothing much to complain about.

This week so far has consisted of about 6hrs of yoga in five days. So I'm all relaxed and in positive thinking mood. Think a Friday arvo swim in the pool might be a good way of finishing this week off with. Ooohhm!

PICTURES FROM THE WEEKEND

Publicerad 2013-06-03 11:52:52 i Allmänt,

Tried out my ITB on a little parkrun last Saturday. The parkrund are a free event aiming to keep people active. All you do is register online and turn up:
Properly dressed for the Australian winter.
I tried a new technique for this run. Taped my feet down the way my physio showed me and ran in my barefooters, which I havent properly converted to yet. (Running in barefooters means that you'll land on the front of your foot rather than your heel). And my knee felt good until the last few hundred meters, where I could start sensing it. Still ended 8th out of 127 females on 24.28, which is a pretty crap time of me. But I suppose good when just trying the leg.
'
Sunday:
While Zelda was sleeping through the whole day, me and Marc (my new homie) joined SBTC for a 70km ride. Sometimes I have to admit you wake up in the morning sort of hoping it will rain. Especially when the alarm goes off at 4.30 and you didn't make it to bed until 10.30pm the night before. BUT. Up you go and it only takes about 5min to remeber why you choose not to stay in bed. In all honesty, I only made it to 68km before I got a flat, and being so close to home, I couldn't be bothered changing the tube on the street. I also managed to fit in 3 yoga classes in 2 days, which I hope will do good for me knee, working on alignments and strenghtening the muscles that are causing the pain.
'
AND.
I have been unable to stop thinking of Kerser, the poor dog... Today at 5pm he was meant to be killed and I've been feeling funny all day and followed his story. I was SO happy reading on "Free Kerser's" facebook page that Kerser has a stayed of execution and was not being euthanized today. I think mainly because of all the media attention the case has caused. I really hope this story will get a happy end...
